Over the last few months we've received a few emails letting us know that we don't have enough football content here at Waikiki Hockey.
Isn't there enough football news out there already? I believe ESPN only shows NFL-related news now, so if you're looking for gridiron videos maybe turn on ESPN. However, our readers are always right so we thought it might time for a football related post.
One of our biggest NFL related posts was Super Bowl Shudder. Today we're going to show you some more NFL inspired music. The classic "We Are The Kickers":
This 'song' is from a 1987 episode of 'Saturday Night Live' hosted by Walter Payton. What was with SNL in the late 80's? Based on this song and our namesake 'Waikiki Hockey' they obviously had problems writing a decent song. Not to worry ... judging by one recent example SNL's song writing skills have increased dramatically:
Yes! We got 'Dick in a Box' into a sports post. It was a pretty big stretch, but we made it.
It's hard to believe but 'We Are The Kickers' isn't the only song about kickers. One of Adam Sandler's crappiest songs is also about kickers; The Lonesome Kicker. Alright that's the last we'll ever talk about kickers. We promise.
We never thought Waikiki Hockey would be posting a single Sarah Palin interview. But now it looks like we have to post another one. Make sure you watch this through:
1. Homer - American bonehead. - "Pull a Homer": to succeed despite idiocy. "Looks like I just pulled a Homer!" - Laker Magic Johnson, after slipping on water and having the ball fly out of his hands, off a ref's head, and into the basket for the game winning three pointer.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have a pretty cool promotion ... players deliver season tickets to the fans. This results in a few awkward moments like in this clip with Sidney Crosby. When the fan gets a crappy player doing the delivering ... the awkward moments are even worse for the players ... but better for us watching.
This video teaches us two things about Greg Oden. 1) He has Obama-mania 2) He likes the backstreet boys. We think those two things may cancel each other out.
How could you not like Trevor Linden? Here's his reaction to getting his jersey retired by the Canucks.
Finally some good news for the Leafs. Apparently, the reason they sucked so severly last season had nothing to do with their complete lack of talent ... it was because the logo they had at center ice was "weak and limp". Phew. Crisis averted ... the new logo is definitely very strong and rigid.
It was announced this week that Patrick Roy will finally be getting his jersey retired by Les Canadiens. Time to revel in some of his best moments (pardon the quality) ... our favourite? Roy at Disney World. What a dork.
This guy had a pretty decent idea ... 10 dirtiest sounding sports names. But unfortunately he didn't excute very well meaning he ends up on the 'worst' side of the list. You think he could have at least gone to the trouble of memorizing the list. Just a little bit of effort ... that's all we ask.
And now for our Clip O' The Week:
You know what's creepy? When your dad comes and hangs out at your College. You know what's creepier? When your dad takes you and your two young female friends to a football game. You know what's even creepier than that? When your dad is David Hasselhoff and he films the whole thing and puts it up on his social networking site (which is called Hoffspace, we kid you not):
Recently, the Australian Olympic Swim team thought it would be a good idea to embarrass themselves by recording this song and donating the proceeds to charity. Very noble of them but you think there would be a less humiliating way to earn some money.
This song reminded me of history's greatest example of a song that is pure awesome even though it is extremely crappy: This wasn't the first time a NFL team created a song for marketing purposes. That honour goes to the 1984 San Francisco 49ers who put together the creatively named 'We Are The Niners'. The Philadelphia Eagles gave it a shot in '88 with 'Buddy's Watching You' ... which is worth watching just for the awkwardness of the kicker rapping. The 1986 Dodgers gave it there best shot with the embarrassing"Baseball Boogie".
Unfortunately for mankind these three were not the last teams to hit the recording studio.
The most successful recording by an player or team would go to either Oscar De La Hoya or Liverpool FC. The Golden Boy's album featuring 'Run to Me' was nominated for a Grammy. Liverpool's 'Anfield Rap' reached #3 on the UK charts in 1988. It's corny but it has a bit of catchiness to it and it pretty comical in parts:
Most of the team songs, while painful to listen to, were made in good fun and with the idea to raise a bit of money for charity ... who is buying these albums anyway?
On the other hand, some athletes have released solo albums or songs ... usually to epic failure and ridicule.
Shaq is one of the better musical athletes out there ... which isn't saying much. He's managed to release five albums, including his debut album "Shaq Diesel" which included the classic "Shoot, Pass, Slam". If Shaq is one of the best out there Deion Sanders must be one of the worst. In the song "Must Be The Money" Sanders gargles his way through over four minutes of pure torture:
We couldn't really find many current examples of teams or athletes recording music. We here are Waikiki Hockey are hoping this changes as these videos are great for posting!
In our research we found a few other videos/songs you might find interesting...and by interesting we mean hilarious:
Tony Parker plays professional basketball, has a hot wife and is a french rap star. Here he is singing 'Balance Toi'
The Cincinnati Bengals brought in funk legend Bootsy Collins to bring some creditability to their 2005 song "Fear Da Tiger" ... it didn't work.
Ozzie Smith recorded a song called "Cupid", we'll give him points for not rapping like almost every other athlete. It does sounds like he's impersonating Kermit the Frog though.
Since we deal with all things obscure here at "Waikiki Hockey" it was only a matter of time before we delved into the bizarre world of streaking. Since the TV networks don’t show streakers for worry of promoting the behaviour we don’t have a lot of experience with them. I haven’t really paid streakers much thought and I haven’t been ‘lucky’ enough to be at a sporting event where a streaker did their thing. But the first question that comes to my mind is why would somebody risk fines, imprisonment, social out casting, and ridicule for a cheap laugh? I went to Wikipedia for some answers and they had almost 4,000 words on streaking. Seriously, four thousands words on streaking! Who are the people going to Wikipedia and updating the streaking page? Anyway, a fellow blogger, Greg, has kindly summarized the wiki-novel so we'll use all his hard work:
First streaker was in 1804, he went onto be a US Senator
College students really like to streak
Term "streaking" was first used in 1973
Streakers are telling us to lighten up and not take life so seriously
Enjoy the streakers doing what they do.
There you go. Who would have thought you would learn something here at Waikiki Hockey? But you’re not here for a history lesson. You’re here for some hard-core nudity…right?
Hockey – Streaking on ice...there’s something magical (and cold) about it. Football – My favourite part of streaking is the takedowns. This one doesn’t disappoint. The guy gets belted so hard he can hardly walk afterwards. Speaking of walking, it’s very rare (and not very pleasant) to see a streaker not at full running speed. Soccer – I wouldn’t think streakers come up with a plan. But if this very poor quality video is accurate this girl must have been pretty happy with the way things turned out with her streak. Cricket – The gentleman’s game offers up these three classics from Australia. Terry Alderman embarrasses himself, Greg Chappel embarrasses the streaker, and Andrew Symonds embarrasses the Australian rugby team:
After all this ‘research’ I still think streaking depends entirely on one thing. Alcohol. What percentage of streakers do you think are sober? My guess….0%. Your drinking buddies convince you it’s a good idea and next thing you know your getting hammered to the ground by a security guard.
"Waikiki Hockey" is a collection of the most obscure, weird, bizarre sport videos, pictures and stories. The best and brightest make it to the Hall of Fame. If you think we're missing something let us know.
Don't know where the name "Waikiki Hockey" comes from? Find out.
